Pictet’s nicotine refining process involves heating pipes until they turn red and hot. When Tully opened the next generation lab, a team spent two years calculating how to expand the process. The final synthesis includes four important steps, which take about one week. Many steps involve heating and cooling to optimize the reaction. Tully declined to disclose the details of the synthesis, saying it was still waiting for three patents.
